Learning guitar chords at first seems almost impossible. Just remember, the greatest guitarists in the world stated out just like you. They all cleared that initial hurdle where they just could not bend their fingers around the strings. Most people give up when they are almost there. Don’t give up! Millions of people have learned guitar chords and so can you. You will learn how to play guitar!
Moving your hand from chord to chord is the best way to practice. Start out with open chords at first. Then you can move on to bar chords. Many students mistakenly think they should only practice one chord at the time. This is not the best approach. Pick a three chord progression and practice moving between those chords. Play without looking at your hands. You need to visualize the chord in your mind’s eye. Notice that even intermediate level guitar players do not look at the hands unless they are in a difficult transition.
The pinky finger is the weakest finger in your hand. For this reason many beginners avoid using it, and place it out of the way in odd positions. The pinky finger should always be hovering above the strings, as it is critical to advanced guitar chording.
It is also important to understand the “root note” of the chord you are playing. For example if you are playing an open D chord, the D (fourth string) is the “root” or bass note of the chord. It is very important that this bass note is clean sounding. One way to learn how to play “clean” chords (no dead strings) is to pick each note versus strumming the whole chord. This will tell you where you are having problems or dead spots. Picking also improves your hand coordination and will help you later down the road when you are learning your guitar scales.
Although frustrating at first, learning to play guitar chords is one of the most life changing pursuits you can master. My longest lasting friends and greatest memories are all from learning guitar. If millions of people like me can learn guitar, so can you.
